Forged in the Austin, Texas music scene, alternative rock band Chill Russell feel like they’re just getting started. The longtime practitioners of independent releases and home studio recorded albums recruited Chris “Frenchie” Smith (Jet, The Toadies, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead) to produce their most recent EP, Soak Up the Sound.
The band’s sound draws from 1960’s guitar powerhouses and 1990’s alt-rockers. “Their affection for the greats of the past is apparent through their fast, loud, and fun dynamic” (KUTX 98.9). The trio, made up of Chase Matkin (vocals, guitar), Daniel Ducloux (vocals, bass), and Patrick Barrow (drums), has toured across the United States performing festivals such as SXSW, Mondo.NYC, NomadX, and more.
DIY magazine described Chill Russell as a “psych-inflected nod to The Beach Boys and The Strokes… they’re not a million miles away from chart-bothering beasts The Black Keys.” The group’s music “is both easily digested but has enough complexity to entertain your average music nerd.” (Greg Ackerman, The Cosmic Clash)
Soak Up the Sound was released on August 21st, 2020 through Green Witch Recordings, and is available everywhere now.
